Bio:
In Summer, I combined my father's home movies with footage of the 1967 riot in Detroit to raise questions about societal ambivalence and assumptions about race.

As a kid, I followed my older brothers to their Detroit Northwest Athletic league baseball games where our father diligently filmed their games. His family films included me splashing in the pool, oblivious to the recent turmoil swirling around our neighborhood. My favorite song at the time was Ball of Confusion by the Temptations, included on this soundtrack. I can remember vividly the excitement that the song brought for all of the neighborhood kids as we danced and spun around to the music. But we were unaware of unaware of the poignancy of the lyrics and just what was taking place around us.

People moving out,
People moving in.
Why, because of the color of their skin
Run, run, run but you sho' can't hide

-Opening lyrics from Ball of Confusion (That's What The World Is Today) by The Temptations

Born in 1966 in Highland Park, Michigan, Susan Cook grew up just south of 6 Mile Road in Detroit until her family moved to the suburb of Oak Park. Susan presently lives in Brooklyn, NY.
