MISSION STATEMENT
|
GAS was established in 2003 as a venue for the pursuit of cultural practices which fosters ideas
and collaborations in multi-disciplinary contemporary art with a
focus on the intersection between music, politics, pop and international
cultures.

AIMS & OBJECTIVES

To extend
the range of art experience.
To encourage emerging artists to exhibit innovative
work in a
professional environment.
To develop a gallery program which includes a wide
range of disciplines and to facilitate and support varied curatorship,
exhibition, and contemporary critique.
To assist in catalogue essays and publication, promotional
material and exhibition concepts.
To promote artists and their practices.
To foster an awareness within both the local downtown
manhattan community and a wider international community of the cultural
pursuits being explored at GAS.
To raise the professional profile of the curators,
writers, exhibitors and designers through exposure and sale of their
work.

LEA REKOW

As founding director of GAS, Lea is active in all
aspects of curating, publishing and programming. She works exhaustively
in film, video and interactive multimedia, and for the last
decade has lived and traveled extensively in over 50 developing
countries, shooting film and still photography. From this
material she has produced a number of ethnographic projects which
have been shown internationally. Lea was previously director of
Harmonic Ranch, a new media studio in TriBeCa, and director of media
programs at the Center for Peace and Human Security. She has taught
as a professor of video at Pratt Institute in Manhattan, performed
with Emergency Broadcast Network, and was a producer of new media
for Simon and Schuster Interactive. Lea holds a Masters degree
in film and digital media.

DYLAN J. GAUTHIER Associate Director |

Dylan Gauthier is Associate Director of GAS. His responsibilities include: organizing and managing the gallery's exhibitions - coordinating special events, liaising with artists, arts institutions and members of the press - overseeing publications and recordings, managing gallery operations and maintaining the physical and virtual gallery presence. In addition, he coordinates the GAS internship program. Dylan studied Art History and Film at the Sorbonne in Paris and the University d'Aix-Marseille III, and graduated from the California State University with a B.A. in French Literature and Linguistics. He works independently as an artist and performer, and collaboratively with several NYC-based arts-activist collectives.

Alice Arnold is Research Associate and Design Consultant
for GAS. Alice Arnold is a photographer whose images are regularly
published in books, magazines and in cd packaging. In addition to
working on commercial assignments, she is also actively photographing
her own projects. Her photographic projects examine city life and
explore urban cultural forms and experiences. This work has been
exhibited in numerous group shows, has been published in books and
magazines, and has been profiled in several articles. In 2002 she
was awarded a NYFA Fellowship in Photography and currently she is
pursuing an MFA degree in the Integrated Media Arts program at Hunter
College.

Gigantic ArtSpace was located at 59 Franklin St, New York, NY 10013 from December 2003 through March 2007. Gigantic NYC's other subsidiary companies included Giganitic Recording Company and Gigantic Pictures.Ê Prior to funding Gigantic NYC, Brian Devine worked for Stanley M. Brooks, a producer of movies and television. He then partnered with writer-director Steven Lisberger (Tron). Lisberger and Devine developed projects for Warner Brothers, Sony/Columbia, Francis Coppola and Kushner-Locke. Additionally, Mr. Devine is an accomplished singer-songwriter having recorded two albums with his band Spanish Speaking Psychics. |
